The Regional Sports Park hall and Aquatic Centre was built to add to an impressive suite of athletics facilities already operational at Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hastings.

The 14m-high sports hall roof is supported in part using four 27m-long trusses weighing seven tonne each. Incorporated into each of the trusses are access walkways for rigging, lighting and signage. The dual pitch across two seperate planes enables the roof to be as high as possible for sports use including basketball and pole vaulting.

The main supporting columns weigh 3.5t each and bolt to heavy K-frame sections to brace the building in two directions, reducing wall bracing and enabling the structure to be as open and free from steelwork congestion as possible.

‘Cranked’ UB columns at odd heights and angles have been incorporated into one wall to create an Olympic-level rock climbing training wall. This solution avoided creating a seperate wall for this purpose and added a design element with external cladding following the cranked wall profile.

With strong ties to sport and community projects in Hawke’s Bay, Red Steel was delighted to be part of this significant regional project and offer our experienced Tekla detailing and design skill set to provide modelling for elements which had proved challenging for the consultants to sketch out on paper.
