Built from the ground up.
Like so many good Kiwi business yarns, the Red Steel story starts not far from the farm.
In the 1960s, Hawke’s Bay engineer Les Nicholas saw a gap in the market for simple steel woolsheds and farm buildings to replace ageing timber stock. Woolaway Engineering was formed, later growing and becoming Woolaway Steel Structures.
In 1994, a young and hungry quantity surveyor named Bob Hawley joined the business.
Fast-forward almost a decade and Bob took over the business, rebranding to Red Steel in 2002.
Over the past 22 years, Bob along with General Manager, Paul Watson, and an experienced team have driven the growth and direction of Red Steel to its current position as one of New Zealand’s leading structural steel fabrication specialists with more than 1,300 successful projects underpinning their reputation.
Engaged for their proven track record building large and often highly technical commercial buildings and precision-engineered architectural homes, Red Steel has developed a reputation for being at the sharp edge of construction innovation and seamlessly merging new tech with good old-fashioned human skills.
With 16 overhead workshop cranes, a large fleet of trucks and site cranes combined with a highly skilled team (hand-picked for being good sorts as well as outstanding fabricators), Red Steel is proud to be - quite literally - supporting many landmark commercial construction projects across the North Island.
Our Purpose:
Is to excel and innovate as one of New Zealand’s leading steel experts and have fun doing it.
Our People
-
BOB HAWLEY - MANAGING DIRECTOR
With a background in quantity surveying and fabrication, Bob founded Red Steel in 2002 and has grown the Company to its present position as one of the leading fabrication and erection businesses in the North Island.
His strong financial understanding of both the construction and engineering industries has helped steer Red Steel’s success, to the point he’s now sometimes able to get in a round of golf or enjoy time out on the water while his team do the heavy lifting.
He’s also passionate about the steel industry, having served twice on the SCNZ executive, including as chairman 2015-17.
-
PAUL WATSON - GENERAL MANAGER
Paul has been part of the Red Steel family for 23 years and he has steered the ship as General Manager since 2020. In his role he oversees the day-to-day running of the business as well as developing new work and relationships.
His passion for the job lies in fostering a family-focused workplace and being able to oversee complex projects from tender through to completion.
Outside work, Paul is most likely to be seen with a trout fishing rod or guitar in his hand and it’s his secret desire to one day buy a collector edition Gibson Les Paul Guitar and that definitely keeps him turning up for the pay cheque.
-
BILL HALPIN - DETAILING MANAGER
As leader of our highly skilled detailing team, Bill gets to combine his passions for accuracy and design. A veteran of 44 years in the construction industry, he’s been a member of Red Steel since its inception, and in that time held roles including estimator, fabricator and erector. This vast experience and unique understanding of all aspects of the steel fabrication process is invaluable to our clients.
When not in a meditative state looking at design drawings at his desk, Bill can be found competing with his grandkids for the best lego collection, or supporting Club Rugby where he helps with administration.
-
ANDY WATSON - SITE MANAGER
Yet another 20-year veteran who has been with Red Steel since the start, Andy is the main liaison between site crews and clients, ensuring timeframes are met and communication is smooth.
As a qualified fitter and welding supervisor, Andy has held roles at Red Steel as fabricator, erector and project manager, which means a holistic understanding of project challenges and how to solve them.
A man who loves the outdoors, he also likes to keep things simple. Both his favourite song and drink are the same…Tennessee Whiskey. What a great bloke.
-
ALISTER VARCOE - WORKSHOP MANAGER
Al ensures technical expertise, manpower and operating resource requirements are allocated to the production process while ensuring all specific quality and programme outcomes are delivered.
Creating and implementing processes and procedures to ensure a seamless workday for all is his superpower. Although, if you ask him this question, he will definitely list quite a few more things he’s a legend at…including harvesting an abundance of fish and crayfish to ensure there’s always loads of fresh seafood on the table for his family.
-
HUGH PATERSON - CONTRACTS MANAGER
Hugh sets project construction programmes and oversees the fabrication, installation and surface protection of the steelwork, ensuring compliance at every part of the process. He also allocates site resources to ensure a smooth installation sequence, fitting in with the clients’ requirements to enable the most efficient project delivery.
Starting off as a rigger then fabricator when Red Steel began, Hugh was also the Company’s first steel detailer and 3D modeller (his design work on The Cloud in Auckland was nationally recognised by SCNZ).
Never one to rest on his laurels, Hugh spends his weekends busy on his lifestyle block with his family, and hopes one day to retire and be self-sufficient (but not for a long time yet, please Hugh!)
-
LYNDA LIVINGSTONE - ADMINISTRATOR
Without Lynda, no one gets paid. Enough said? A stalwart who has kept the ship sailing steadily since Red Steel began, Lynda loves the awesome team culture and has been saying ‘keep calm and carry on’ since before it was even cool.
An avid walker and cyclist, Lynda loves life’s simple pleasures and believes ‘the best things in life aren’t things.’
-
RORY COOK - SITE FOREMAN
Rory oversees the installation of steel on-site and also holds multiple welding tickets and has an extensive background in fabrication and site welding. This makes him the man to go to for tricky installs and making things fit when it seems they won’t.
His level head, great work ethic and exacting standards makes him a popular guy to have on-site.
Away from work his happy place is in the great outdoors hunting or fly fishing with his two energetic sons.
-
WILLS POMANA - SITE FOREMAN
With a long history at Red Steel of steel rigging and on-site crane operation, Wills is definitely the man you want when there’s a job to be done and a team to lead. Being part of a crew that is passionate to get the mahi done, he assures us that even though he’s now a great grandfather, he ain’t going anywhere soon.
Outside work, Wills has a busy life with 9 grandkids and loves being part of his son’s reggae band.
-
BERT VALDEZ - SITE FOREMAN
Bert oversees site erection and maintaining safety among his team and others around the job site and also loads and delivers steel to site.
Awesome attention to detail has made him an invaluable member of the Red Steel team since 2018. Keeping his team smiling is as important to him as getting the job done well.
He’s driven by always learning new things in his role and when he’s not hard at work, he’ll be enjoying family life, riding road bikes and working out at the gym.
-
SAM ROBERTS - ESTIMATOR
With 18 years’ experience as a detailer doing a mix of product design and structural detailing, Sam is ideally positioned to accurately price a wide range of jobs.
Seeing a completed project after being so involved at the design stage is an immensely satisfying aspect of his role.
A trained mechanical engineer, Sam is in his happy place tinkering in the garage, and also loves getting out on his mountainbike with some rock blasting in his headphones when life as a busy dad allows.
